Lithium-Ion batteries provide the highest power density of currently
available batteries. Pound for pound they can provide up to five times the
energy storage of lead acid batteries and more than twice the capacity of
NiCd batteries of the same weight. Unlike lead-acid or NiCd batteries,
Li-Ion batteries are environmentally friendly. These advantages come at a cost -
Li-Ion batteries are more expensive then other battery types. Li-Ion batteries
cannot be rapid-charged and will require 12 hours or more to fully recharge.
Li-Ion batteries have a very long cycle life and can usually be discharged/recharged
up to 1,000 times while retaining 80% of their original capacity.
All Cyclone Li-Ion batteries include a Battery Management System.
The BMS balances the charge and insures that each cell will be fully charged to 4.2v
giving the 24v pack a voltage of 29.4v when fully charged. The BMS also provides
a low-voltage cutoff that disconnects the pack when any individual cell drops to 3.2v.
In addition, the BMS provides protection against short circuits. The included
push-button switch acts as a power on/off switch to disconnect the battery from the
controller when you are parked. An appropriately sized fuse is also included in
each wiring harness to further protect the pack and the BMS.
Cyclone Li-Ion batteries are available in three sizes as shown at the right.
In selecting a battery it is important to match the continuous current rating
of the battery with the continuous current requirements of the motor.
